Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Movement Abilities: Double Jump, Bosses and Obstacles
Published: Last updated:
Short answer four guides list the five movement abilities in one place (Keengamer, TheGamer, GameTrek and Destructoid), and each ties every ability to one boss: Arcane Whip to The Fallen, Holy Light to Joan of Arc, Smash to Talos, Aerial Rush to Carmilla and Double Jump to Death's second fight in Notre-Dame. Double Jump needs the longest preparation, so it comes first below. The guides differ on the Carmilla and Talos order, on where Double Jump arrives and on what to equip for Notre-Dame; those differences sit side by side and are not ruled on.
A source-by-source comparison of the five movement abilities, checked October 28, 2026.
Double Jump: Steps and Source Differences
Double Jump is the fifth and last ability in each of the four lists above. It comes from a second meeting with Death, which is a fight Rose can win, unlike the Catacombs meeting (Catacombs of Paris page). The table sets out the preparation in the sequence followed by the Keengamer and GameTrek step lists; the guides do not agree on the order of steps 1 and 2 (see M1 below).
| Step | What the guides describe | Where they differ | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Smash from Talos | Beat Talos, whose boss room is the Throne of the Builder, in the lower Clock Tower. Smash then breaks the stone sculpture in Brauner's Atelier in the Main Hall, which leads to Brauner's card, The Artist. | RPS calls the ability Slam; whether Brauner counts as a fight differs (see D9) | Keengamer · GameTrek · RPS |
| 2. Brauner's Paintbrush from Carmilla | Carmilla is fought at the Observatory, high in the Library. Brauner's Paintbrush is among the items named for that fight, and three guides call it necessary to reach Notre-Dame. | Two guides never mention the Paintbrush in their Double Jump steps (see D4) | TheGamer · Keengamer · GameTrek |
| 3. The Artist and the painting | Equip Brauner's card and interact with the Notre-Dame painting in the Gallery of Eternal Night, Main Hall. | TheGamer and the Keengamer movement article say to equip the Masterpiece Arcana; Game Rant and MapGenie list Masterpiece as the reward for The Artist (see D4) | RPS · GameTrek · Keengamer · TheGamer |
| 4. Melody Sheets and the Great Organ | Inside Notre-Dame, three Melody Sheets give sign sequences to play on the Great Organ. Playing them clears the energy blocking Death's room. | GameTrek's Double Jump page has no organ step; MapGenie's Death entry names cleansing the organ as the requirement | Keengamer · RPS · TheGamer · MapGenie |
| 5. Death, second meeting | Defeat Death in Notre-Dame. Unlike the Catacombs meeting, this one can be won. | Where the ability arrives differs (see the trigger table below) | RPS · Keengamer · Game Rant · GameTrek |
Organ Sequences as Printed
Keengamer's walkthrough and RPS's Double Jump page both print the three sequences. The Sonata and Concerto match. The Fugue differs in length: Keengamer lists four steps and RPS prints five symbols.
| Melody Sheet | Where it is found | Keengamer's sequence | RPS's symbols |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fugue of Notre-Dame | Near the Great Organ (Keengamer: Undercroft; RPS: Great Organ Room, west of the organ) | Moon, Sun, Moon, Virgo | ⭘ ☼ ⭘ ♍ ♌ (the last two are Virgo and Leo) |
| Sonata of Notre-Dame | Stained Glass Gallery area (RPS: Sealed Scriptorium, shown as Stained Glass Gallery on the map; Keengamer: beyond the Sealed Scriptorium) | Sagittarius, Capricorn, Pisces, Aquarius, then Capricorn, Sagittarius and Capricorn again | ♐ ♑ ♓ ♒ ♑ ♐ ♑ |
| Concerto of Notre-Dame | La Flèche, the top of Notre-Dame (Keengamer: top of the scaffolding) | Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Leo, Virgo, Leo, Gemini | ♊ ♋ ♍ ♌ ♍ ♌ ♊ |
Where Double Jump Triggers
This is the same difference as D5 on the route overview. Each row gives the position and the guides that hold it.
| Position | Guides | How the guide words it |
|---|---|---|
| After the cutscene that follows the fight | RPS · GameTrek | RPS: Rose leaves the room after a scene with Trevor and the ability arrives in the next room of Notre-Dame. GameTrek: wait for the cutscene to end and the jump is granted automatically. |
| In the Choir room | Keengamer · TheGamer · Destructoid | Keengamer: a Choir cutscene, then a gap beneath a high ledge, with the tutorial appearing there. TheGamer and Destructoid name the Choir room as the place. |
| At the Choir doorway, after a conversation | Keengamer | Keengamer's walkthrough chapter lists it after the infirmary scene, at a glowing doorway beside a gap, where Leon speaks. |
The Five Abilities at a Glance
Each row gives the boss and place the guides name, when the ability arrives, and what it is for. Names in the cells are the guides that say it; the last column links them.
| Ability | Boss and place | When it arrives | What it opens | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arcane Whip | The Fallen, the first boss, in the Paris Streets sewers | Shortly after the fight, in a short scene on the way out (IGN, Keengamer) | Luminous anchors, hooks and enemies to swing from or pull toward | Keengamer · IGN · TheGamer · GameTrek |
| Holy Light | Joan of Arc (card: The Warrior), top of the Prison Tower, Paris Streets | Shortly after the fight (Keengamer, TheGamer); IGN and RPS have it used at once to finish the tower | Chaos Shards, plus a timed counter called Light Parade | Keengamer · IGN · TheGamer · GameTrek |
| Smash | Talos (card: The Builder), Throne of the Builder, lower Clock Tower | On defeating Talos (Keengamer, TheGamer, Destructoid, GameTrek) | Yellow blocks, plus floors with golden cracks | Keengamer · TheGamer · Destructoid · GameTrek |
| Aerial Rush | Carmilla (card: The Occultist), Observatory at the top of the Library | On defeating Carmilla (TheGamer, Destructoid, GameTrek); Keengamer places it on a ledge past the boss hall's left exit | A mid-air dash across gaps and narrow openings | Keengamer · TheGamer · Destructoid · GameTrek |
| Double Jump | Death, second meeting, Notre-Dame | See the Double Jump section above | A second jump in mid-air to reach higher ledges | Keengamer · TheGamer · Destructoid · GameTrek |
Obstacle to Ability
Each obstacle below is paired with the ability that answers it, using only pairings that at least two independent publishers state. The last column holds naming differences.
| Obstacle | Ability | Guides that say so | Naming and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glowing anchors and gaps too wide to jump | Arcane Whip | Keengamer · GameTrek · TheGamer · IGN | Keengamer and GameTrek write Luminous Anchors; RPS writes Sharpened Anchors; IGN names anchors by colour, yellow and purple |
| Chaos Shard walls, platforms and passages | Holy Light | Keengamer · GameTrek · TheGamer · IGN | IGN writes Halo of Light and abyss shards; IGN and RPS both note that shards act as a floor while the light is off |
| An incoming attack | Holy Light, as Light Parade | Keengamer · GameTrek · IGN · TheGamer | A tap just before the hit, as opposed to holding the button |
| Yellow blocks and cracked golden floors | Smash | Keengamer · TheGamer · GameTrek · Destructoid | RPS writes Slam |
| The stone sculpture in Brauner's Atelier | Smash | Keengamer · GameTrek · RPS | The break leads to The Artist, the card that opens the Notre-Dame painting |
| Horizontal gaps and narrow openings | Aerial Rush | Keengamer · TheGamer · Destructoid · GameTrek | GameTrek words it as a forward burst while airborne |
| Higher platforms and ledges | Double Jump | TheGamer · GameSpot | TheGamer says the second jump reaches higher platforms; GameSpot's relic entries tell players to double jump to some ledges |
A few rooms only make sense on a second visit, after the matching ability has been earned. RPS says a Chaos Shard wall in the sewers cannot be broken before Holy Light, and IGN and GameSpot both send players back into the shard-covered rooms of the Prison Tower after Joan, where the Obsidian Fang relic sits.
Where Guides Differ
The rows below set each guide's wording next to the others.
| ID | Topic | What each guide reports |
|---|---|---|
| M1 | Carmilla or Talos first (D3) | Carmilla is listed ahead of Talos in RPS's boss list and in Keengamer's chapter order, while IGN's overview table starts with the Clock Tower. TheGamer, GameTrek and Destructoid each give Smash before Aerial Rush; the Keengamer and GameTrek step lists open with Smash. In RPS's Double Jump article the three bosses appear with no sequence. |
| M2 | What opens Notre-Dame (D4) | All guides that cover the painting ask for the Artist card. The Paintbrush is added as a further requirement by TheGamer, GameTrek and Keengamer's movement article, and left unmentioned by RPS and by Keengamer's walkthrough chapter. For the card to equip, TheGamer and Keengamer's movement article say Masterpiece Arcana, while RPS and Keengamer's walkthrough say The Artist; Game Rant and MapGenie list Masterpiece as the reward that comes with The Artist (Brauner). |
| M3 | Where Double Jump triggers (D5) | See the trigger table above: after the cutscene (RPS, GameTrek), in the Choir room (Keengamer's movement page, TheGamer, Destructoid) or at a Choir doorway after a conversation (Keengamer's walkthrough chapter). |
| M4 | Names | The ability is spelled Slam by RPS and Smash by the others (D7). IGN writes Halo of Light and abyss shards for Holy Light and Chaos Shards. Anchors are Luminous (Keengamer, GameTrek), Sharpened (RPS) or colour-coded (IGN). |
| M5 | Fugue sequence | Keengamer's walkthrough lists four steps for the Fugue, ending at Virgo; RPS's Double Jump page prints five symbols, with Leo after Virgo. |
| M6 | Organ step | Keengamer, RPS and TheGamer include the Great Organ before Death; GameTrek's Double Jump page goes from the painting to the Death fight; MapGenie lists cleansing the organ as the requirement. |
| M7 | Where Aerial Rush arrives | Keengamer's movement page places it on a ledge reached through the left exit of Carmilla's hall; TheGamer, Destructoid and GameTrek state only that defeating Carmilla grants it. |
