Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Catacombs of Paris: Entry, Death's First Fight and Items by Source
Published: Last updated:
Short answer the Catacombs of Paris open once Rose holds the three keys from The Fallen, Joan of Arc and Medusa (IGN, RPS, Keengamer and Polygon). The area runs from the Catacomb Entrance down to Death's chamber, where a scripted fight ends with the castle rising over Paris. Rose then climbs the Collapsed Path of Orpheus to the first Ferryman wharf. Guides differ on how much damage Rose can deal to Death, on where the Whip is found and on how to divide the area into chapters. Mammon and the Circle of Greed are in the Catacombs too, as an optional return visit.
A source-by-source comparison of the Catacombs of Paris, checked October 28, 2026.
Entry: Three Keys and the Sealed Gate
IGN and RPS say the area opens after the first three bosses, and Polygon lists the same three: The Fallen, Joan of Arc and Medusa. Keengamer and MapGenie name the items as keys, one per boss. The guides use different words for them: keys (Keengamer, MapGenie, RPS Part 3), gems or gemstones (IGN, RPS Part 1) and emblems (Polygon). IGN's Cemetery page puts the sealed gate beside the Path of the Rat route, and Keengamer describes an enormous sealed gate in the sewers beyond the Sewer Reservoir. The route overview covers the three fights in stages 1 to 3.
Areas in Order
The guides list the areas in largely the same order, with the exceptions noted in C3 and C4 below. The table gives what the guides mention in each area.
| Area | What the guides mention | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Catacomb Entrance | The area begins at the Catacomb Entrance and drops Rose into platforming rooms. IGN and RPS describe shard-covered floors and walls that her halo of light passes through; IGN, RPS and GameTrek place a Brave Heart Fragment on a side route. | IGN · RPS · GameTrek |
| Path of the Abyss and Quarry Elevator | Saw-blade rooms lead to the Quarry Elevator, where the first Mirror of Life of the area waits. | IGN · RPS · GameTrek · Keengamer |
| Charnel Galleries and Crossroads of the Dead | A Spirit explains the green Death Mark symbols on the walls and the marks appear on the map. A chest in the Crossroads of the Dead holds the Pair of Longswords. | IGN · RPS · GameTrek · Polygon |
| Chamber of Whispers and Gallery of Teeth | Saw-blade platforming between levers, leading on to De Rais Necropolis. | IGN · RPS · GameTrek |
| De Rais Necropolis and Jaws of Limbo | Dragon-skull encounters (RPS calls them Bone Pillars), then a lever in the Jaws of Limbo that opens the way down (RPS, IGN, GameTrek). A side room holds the Necro Charm relic (RPS, GameTrek, GameSpot). | RPS · IGN · GameTrek · GameSpot |
| Throat of Hell, Realm of Old Night and Condemned Mineshaft | The Ebony Claw relic (RPS, GameSpot) and a Wise Heart Fragment (RPS, IGN) are in the Throat of Hell. A mineshaft elevator links back to the Quarry Elevator (RPS, IGN, GameTrek). | RPS · IGN · GameSpot · GameTrek |
| Blood Pits and Hall of the Fallen Angels | RPS and IGN put the Whip chest in the Hall of the Fallen Angels, while GameTrek ties the Whip to the Blood Pits. IGN also lists a Brave Heart Fragment in the Blood Pits. | RPS · IGN · GameTrek |
| Stairway to Hell | A lever opens the way to the boss door, and a lift links back toward the mineshaft. | IGN · RPS · GameTrek |
Death's First Fight
The guides present this meeting as a scripted setback rather than the fight where Death is beaten, and they call his tarot card The Shadow. They differ on how much damage Rose can deal first, and RPS's own pages differ from each other.
| Position | Guides | How the guide words it |
|---|---|---|
| No damage possible | IGN · MapGenie | IGN: none of Rose's attacks work and Death makes short work of her. MapGenie: Death cannot be defeated in the first encounter even if its health is drained to zero. |
| A few hits may land | RPS | RPS Part 3 (updated October 27) calls the fight unwinnable but says an expert may land a few shots. RPS's boss list (updated October 22) says Rose dealt a smidgeon of damage and that it is unclear whether Death is beatable. |
| Forced loss, over quickly | Polygon · GameTrek | Polygon: the loss comes when Death touches Rose, about two seconds in (Game Rant also describes a fight that is meant to be lost). GameTrek: a forced-loss fight on its chapter page and a scripted loss on its boss list. |
| Part of the story, not the permanent defeat | Keengamer | Keengamer: the encounter is a story beat, not the fight that finishes Death off, and advises dealing damage when the arena allows. |
Afterwards, IGN and Keengamer describe a cutscene in which Dracula's castle rises over Paris. RPS and IGN put Rose in the Collapsed Path of Orpheus when she wakes. Before the boss door, Keengamer and RPS both point to the last Mirror of Life, and RPS adds that two lifts lead back to it.
Death returns in Notre-Dame as a fight that can be won (Keengamer, RPS, Game Rant and GameTrek); the steps that lead there are on the movement abilities page.
What the Area Yields
No movement ability comes from a Catacombs boss in the four ability lists (Keengamer, TheGamer, GameTrek and Destructoid); see the movement abilities page. The Whip listed below is a weapon type, separate from the Arcane Whip ability (RPS and IGN treat them separately).
| Item | Kind | Where the guides place it | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pair of Longswords | Weapon | Chest in the Crossroads of the Dead | RPS · IGN |
| Whip | Weapon | Chest in the Hall of the Fallen Angels (RPS, IGN); GameTrek labels the section the Blood Pits | RPS · IGN · GameTrek |
| Mourning Bead | Relic | Quarry Elevator area, in a room behind a puzzle | RPS · GameSpot · GameTrek |
| Specter's Whisper | Relic | Charnel Galleries | GameSpot · GameTrek |
| Necro Charm | Relic | Side room in the Jaws of Limbo | RPS · GameSpot · GameTrek |
| Ebony Claw | Relic | Throat of Hell | RPS · GameSpot |
| Wise Heart Fragment | Upgrade | Throat of Hell | RPS · IGN |
| Brave Heart Fragments | Upgrade | Catacomb Entrance (IGN, RPS, GameTrek); IGN also lists one in the Blood Pits | IGN · RPS · GameTrek |
Mammon and the Circle of Greed
Mammon is an optional fight behind the Gate of Flesh. GameSpot's relic table, RPS, GameTrek, Keengamer, Game Rant and MapGenie each put the gate, or the Circle of Greed itself, inside the Catacombs region. Opening it takes all three Eye relics, worn at the same moment.
| Relic | Place | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Thrilling Eye | Hospital, Paris Streets | GameSpot · Keengamer · GameTrek · RPS |
| Trembling Eye | Pillaged Tombs, Holy Innocents' Cemetery | GameSpot · Keengamer · GameTrek · RPS |
| Oozing Eye | Circle of Greed, in the Catacombs | GameSpot · Keengamer · GameTrek · RPS |
Rewards are the Wheel of Chaos (the Miser card) and the Ferryman's Obol (Keengamer, MapGenie and Game Rant). RPS says the gate can be reached only after all traversal abilities are in hand, when backtracking; Keengamer's chapter order places the Circle of Greed after its Library and Clock Tower chapters. The route in differs by guide: Keengamer passes the Collapsed Path, the Realm of Old Night and then the Antechamber of Sin, and GameSpot's entries for the Oozing Eye and the Ebony Claw say to enter through the rear of the cemetery area, Holy Innocents'.
Where the Catacombs End and the Next Stage Begins
The route overview treats the Death scene as stage 4 and the Ferryman, Justice District and Notre-Dame Bridge as stage 5. After the wharf, Rose goes through the Justice District sewers, the Court of Justice and the Docks to the Gate to the Stone Bridge, then on to Isaac at the castle (Keengamer, RPS and IGN).
| Guide | Catacombs section | What follows |
|---|---|---|
| Keengamer | Chapter 4, ending with the castle rising after the Death scene. The Circle of Greed is in chapter 9. | Chapter 5 starts at the Ferryman and runs to the first Isaac fight and the castle gate. |
| RPS | Part 3 runs from the entrance through the Death scene, the wharf and the Justice District to the Gate to the Stone Bridge. | Part 4 starts with Notre-Dame Bridge and Isaac. |
| IGN | One page runs from the Catacomb Entrance through the Death scene, the wharf, the Hall of Mirrors note and Isaac's fight. | The same page continues into the Main Hall entrance. |
| GameTrek | Chapter 5, ending at the Ferryman and the trip to the Streets of Paris. | Chapter 6 runs to the castle approach; its menus call it Streets of Paris and its overview list Reach Dracula's Castle. |
Where Guides Differ
Each row lines up the guides' own descriptions of the same point.
| ID | Topic | What each guide reports |
|---|---|---|
| C1 | Damage to Death in the first fight | See the Death table above: none (IGN, MapGenie), a few hits at most (RPS), advice to deal damage when the arena allows (Keengamer) or a fight over in seconds (Polygon, GameTrek). |
| C2 | Words for the gate items | Keys (Keengamer, MapGenie, RPS Part 3), gems or gemstones (IGN, RPS Part 1), emblems (Polygon). |
| C3 | Where the Whip is | RPS and IGN put the chest in the Hall of the Fallen Angels; GameTrek ties the Whip to the Blood Pits section. |
| C4 | Realm of Old Night | Keengamer sends Rose through it on the way down. IGN and GameTrek go from the Throat of Hell straight to the Condemned Mineshaft, and RPS treats it as a side trip from the Throat of Hell to a Mirror of Life. |
| C5 | Where the door to Mammon sits | The Circle of Greed is in the Catacombs for GameSpot, RPS, GameTrek and Keengamer; Keengamer gives it chapter 9. GameTrek's boss list names Mammon's location as the Treasury Area, and Keengamer calls the door the flesh-and-eyes door where RPS, GameTrek, Game Rant and MapGenie write Gate of Flesh. |
| C6 | Where the first wharf door is | Three guides (RPS, IGN, GameTrek) have it at the end of the Collapsed Path of Orpheus climb. Keengamer gives a heading, northwest from the underground ruins, and Polygon ties it to the Death's Throat area. |
| C7 | Chapter boundaries | See the division table above; the Catacombs section ends at the castle rising (Keengamer), at the Ferryman (GameTrek) or at the stone-bridge gate (RPS, IGN). |
